PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES
Group of words that begins with a preposition
and usually ends with a noun or pronoun ,
called the object of the preposition.
 I will meet you at the movie.
Prep. Phrases might occur in a series and may
have more than one object.
 My skis sped down the hill over the cliff into the river.
 We sent invitations to Jack, Ken, and Renee.
COMMON PREPOSITIONS
FUNCTIONS OF PREP. PHRASES
Can function as an adjective or an
adverb in a sentence.
ADJECTIVALS – Modify nouns and
pronouns. (acts as an adj.)
ADVERBIALS – Modify verbs, adjectives,
or other adverbs. (acts as an adv)
ADJECTIVE PHRASES
Describe a noun or pronoun.
Answer the questions:
 Which one?
 What kind?
 How much/many?
The man with the beard is my dad.
I bought a chest for my tools.
ADVERB PHRASES
Modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.
Answer the questions:
How?
Where?
Why?
When?
To what extent?
ADVERB PHRASES
She overcame evil with kindness.
I jumped into the water.
For many years, I was afraid to talk.
During the summer, the rainfall was
heavy.
RULES FOR PREP. PHRASES
 Prep Phrase at the beginning of the sentence
(introductory clause)
 Automatically Adverb
 Phrase follows the subject
 Automatically Adjective
 Phrase follows the verb, adjective, or adverb
 Automatically Adverb
 If it can be moved, it is an ADVERB. ADJECTIVE
phrases cannot move.
