Islam teaches that: parents should love and take care of their children parents should teach them all about Islam and help them become good Muslims children should respect and obey their parents children should look after parents when they are older. Extended family, and the amount of care and support these members provide, is very important in Islam. 3 of 8 © Boardworks Ltd 2016 Muhammad and the family 4 of 8 © Boardworks Ltd 2016 The role and importance of mothers In Islam, although men and women are equal under Allah, they have different (complementary) roles because of their different biological natures. Muslims believe that God created women to have children and bring them up, so the principal role for women is to keep a halal home and raise children. Increasingly, this traditional role is changing, with many Muslim women able to hold down careers as well as maintaining the halal home. This is not forbidden in Islam and is sometimes encouraged. 5 of 8 © Boardworks Ltd 2016 The role of fathers Muslims believe that the main role of fathers in the family is to ensure their children never go without. As Allah gave men a stronger physique than women, fathers can provide financially for the family by going out to work in a halal way. Increasingly, Muslim fathers see their role as involving more than just financial provision, but emotional support too. Like mothers, fathers are also obliged to bring their children up to be good Muslims. 6 of 8 © Boardworks Ltd 2016 The mosque and family life Investigate other ways mosques can help families. 7 of 8 © Boardworks Ltd 2016 Want to see more?
