Lincoln
VS
Lee
Abraham Lincoln
• Was elected president right before the
Civil war broke out.
• Because of is courage strength and
dedication while enduring a nation torn
by war, he has earned the reputation as a
champion of emancipation.
• Wrote the Gettysburg Address in 2
WEEKS!!
•Many southerners were against Lincoln
because they thought he would abolish
slaver if he became president.
•They thought he would come up with
new policies that would make them lose
the profit off of free labor from slaves and
the south’s economy would fall.
Robert E. Lee
• A Nationalist that disagreed with the
secession of the south but was faithful to
his State.
• He swore to never go against his own
state of Virginia.
• He was respected the views of the north
and also was faithful to his state and
risked his life to defend it.
• Lee showed this respect and loyalty in
letter entitled Letter to His Son
• Lincoln actually offered Lee the
commanding position to the
union forces but he declined
due to this loyalty.

•During the battle at Gettysburg more than
620000 soldiers were killed.
•Out of all the battles of civil war 620000
soldiers died in this one battle. Lincoln spoke
at the sight of this battle because of how
tragic it was.
• This speech is still memorable today
because the effect Lincoln had on the
nation.
• It realized that the world was watching
what would result in the civil war and the
fact that the nation will be dramatically
changed.
• Speech started with the birth of the
country and ended with the future of the
country
• One quote from it is “the world will little
note, nor long remember what we say
here, but it can never forget what they
did here.”
• The significance of this quote is that what
happens in the war will be remembered
much more than what Lincoln said at the
memorial.
• Lincoln was emphasizing the importance
of the war.

Letter to His Son
• One thing lee expresses in this letter is
how he does not find a country kept
together by swards an bayonets. He goes
on to say that this is when war takes over
brotherly love.
• He told his son how he disagreed with
the civil war and with the secession but
he also showed his devotion to his state
in his last line:
• “If the Union is dissolved, and the government
disrupted, I shall return to my native state and
share the miseries of my people; and, save in
defense, will draw my sword on none.”
• This shows how even if the government he
believes in is beaten he will go back to his
native state and endure the repercussions
that will come to a separated United States of
America and never pull his sword to them.
• Says “But I can anticipate no greater calamity
for the country than a dissolution of the
union.”
