LOUSIANA STATE UNIVERSITY HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER – SHREVEPORT
RADIOLOGY RESIDENCY PROGRAM
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES FOR 2 WEEK MRI ROTATION
Rotation Overview: This 2 week rotation, which will be scheduled sometime during the last 6 months of
the 3rd year of residency (PGY-4) is designed to increase the resident’s knowledge of and exposure to MR
Imaging in one or more of the following areas:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Neuroradiology
Body Imaging
Breast Imaging
Musculoskeletal Imaging
Patient Care:
1. Increased mastery of listed objectives for 1st and 2nd year residents in the neuro, body,
breast and MSK sections.
2. Demonstrate knowledge in all aspects of MRI safety, bio effects and FDA limits.
3. Demonstrate the ability to integrate laboratory findings and other clinical parameters in
recommending the appropriate protocols / sequences that should be obtained for a
particular study.
4. Integration of MRI findings with other clinical and laboratory findings to arrive at as specific
a diagnosis as possible.
Medical Knowledge:
1. Increased mastery of listed objectives for 1st and 2nd year residents in the neuro, body,
breast and MSK sections that are specific to MR imaging.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of commonly used MR sequences in each section and participate in
protocol selection for MR exams based on the clinical picture of each patient.
3. Demonstrate the ability to recognize the appearance of specific MR sequences when
interpreting studies.
4. Demonstrate knowledge of the factors affecting spatial resolution, signal-to-noise ratio,
acquisition time and image contrast.
5. Recognize common artifacts seen in MR imaging and be able to discuss them.
6. Identify normal and abnormal findings on all MR sequences and give an appropriate
differential diagnosis.
Interpersonal and Communication Skills:
1. Increased mastery of listed objectives for 1st and 2nd year residents in the neuro, body,
breast and MSK sections.
2. Demonstrate improved ability to communicate radiology written reports clearly and
concisely, correcting any mistakes prior to signing off on the report and documenting
communication with technical personnel and other healthcare providers when appropriate.
3. Demonstrate leadership role in communication/interactions with technical personnel, other
health care providers, patients and family members.
Professionalism:
1. Increased mastery of listed objectives for 1st and 2nd year residents in the neuro, body,
breast and MSK sections.
2. Demonstrate altruism (putting the interest of patients and others above their own selfinterest).
Practice-Based Learning and Improvement:
1. Analyze practice experience and perform practice-based improvement for cognitive
knowledge, observational skills, and formulating a synthesis and impression.
2. Demonstrate the use of multiple sources including information technology to optimize
lifelong learning and to support patient care decisions.
3. Stay up to date on current literature, particularly journals such as Radiology, Radiographics,
and the American Journal of Roentgenology. Continue to develop a lifelong pattern of
reading journals such as these.
4. Demonstrate awareness of information resources available online to practicing radiologists
(such as www.mrisafety.com).
System-Based Practice:
1. Review costs of different MRI procedures and impact of these costs on appropriate choices
for clinical use.
2. Demonstrate ability to utilize the ACR Appropriateness Criteria as it relates to MRI to assist
other health care providers in making the most appropriate imaging decision for a specific
clinical condition.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of the ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards for MRI.
4. Demonstrate knowledge of how decisions about the timing and availability of MR Imaging
may affect hospital length of stay, referral patterns for specific exams, and the use of MR
facilities outside of LSUHSC.
