HMRI Imaging Centre
Overview
The HMRI Imaging Centre is a partnership arrangement between the University of Newcastle (UON), Hunter
Medical Research Institute (HMRI) and Hunter New England Local Health District (HNEH). The facility houses
a Siemens MAGNETOM Prisma flagship 3T MR system, which is the first of its kind in Australia and boasts the
most advanced scanning technology in the Southern Hemisphere. The Centre is entirely devoted to medical
research imaging purposes.
Vision
To increase the capacity for both the University of Newcastle and the wider Hunter region to
make meaningful contributions to the health and wellbeing of Australians, and the international
community, through ground-breaking magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) supported research.
Objectives and goals
•
To drive research and clinical capabilities in the application of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and enable the University to position itself at the national and international forefront in the development and testing of MRI technology.
•
Provide national and international leadership in MRI-based research through access to cutting-edge research capabilities and infrastructure, including technology unmatched in Australia.
•
Increase competitiveness and capacity for major national and international research grants in (but not limited to) cognitive science, neurology, oncology and psychiatry.
•
Increase external research income funding and commercial contracts.
•
Drive new international research collaborations with major international institutions via highly marketable infrastructure.
•
Increase involvement and contribution to multisite multinational research studies.
•
Provide a unique teaching platform across multiple health and medical disciplines, including medicine, surgery, neurology, radiology and the health sciences (radiography).
•
Deliver a world-class healthcare infrastructure for the local community.
•
Strengthen partnerships between UON, HMRI and HNEH.
