MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING BRAIN Approved by: Senior Manager, Diagnostic Imaging Diagnostic Imaging Policy & Procedures Manual Number: X-25 Date Effective July 1, 2015 Next Review (3 years from Effective Date) July 2018 Purpose To utilize Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the visualization of the brain and pathological diagnosis of the brain. This may require contrast media administration. Applicability This policy and procedure applies to Covenant Health Edmonton Acute Care facilities, patient care provider staff and physicians. Procedure Duration Fifteen (15) to forty-five (45) minutes. Booking Procedure 1. By Nursing Unit or attending physician or designate. 2. Patient and/or family member will complete and supply Magnetic Resonance imaging Consult form and Screening form. 3. Generate an order using electronic order entry system. Indicate pertinent history, patient allergies, infection precautions or any other special care requirements 4. Nursing unit will be informed of examination time and any patient preparation. Scheduling Caution: Scanner weight capacity is 200 kg (440 lbs) and the inside diameter is 60 cm (24 inches). Please do not book procedures on patients that do not meet this criteria. If there is a concern with patient size even if weight is below stated limit, please contact MRI staff directly and the technologist can schedule a fitting. Preparation a) Administer medications as ordered. b) Discontinue medications running through pumps, if possible. If not possible, the tubing must be extended long enough for pump to remain outside of scanning room (approximately 30 feet or the length of two extensions). c) The patient must be wearing a hospital gown without metal snaps, pins or fasteners. If patient is wearing a diaper, it must be the disposable type with no snaps. d) The patient must remove all metal items before coming to the MRI Department. This includes pins, hair pieces, false teeth, jewelry and prostheses. The patients may keep their glasses and hearing aid until after the MRI Technologist has explained the procedure to them. e) The patient’s chart including the medication record (MAR) must accompany the patient to the department. INFORMATION NOTE TO NURSING PERSONNEL: MRI Technologists screen all patients and staff before entering the scanning room. Patients must be able to communicate with Technologist or have a family member available to confirm screening information. If the patient requires an interpreter, the nursing unit will make arrangements for Interpretive Services to be available for the procedure. The nursing unit will then advise Diagnostic Imaging that these arrangements have been made.
