Name: ___________________________________________________________________ Period: __________ Understanding Viruses VIDEO COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS: 1. What is a virus? Viruses are pieces of genetic information wrapped in a protein coat, waiting for the next host to invade. 2. How many different cold viruses are there, and how many of them are you likely to get in your lifetime? There are at least 100 different cold viruses. A person will get about 50 in a lifetime. 3. How does a bacteriophage reproduce? A bacteriophage reproduces by landing on a bacterium, sticking a point through the cell membrane and injecting its DNA. The bacteria then reproduces hundreds of new viruses. The excess material growing in the bacteria cell causes it to explode, spraying out the newborn viruses. 4. RNA viruses, like flu viruses, can mutate. How does this help the virus stay in the environment? A virus that mutates ensures its own survival. The mutation makes it unrecognizable to immune systems; therefore, it can infect the same individual over and over again. 5. What does rotavirus do to its victims? Rotavirus causes severe diarrhea and kills more than five million children a year. 6. What type of threat is smallpox in the 1990s? Smallpox was eradicated in 1978. The virus is essentially extinct. 7. Why is it important for virologists to study tropical rain forest life forms? Tropical rain forests contain about 90% of all species on Earth. It is estimated that 14 million species are unknown today and can harbor unknown viruses. 8. How have Brazilian mosquitos helped virus researchers? Brazilian mosquitos so far have yielded 40 brand-new viral strains.
