ROCK STUDY GUIDE
You will fill in your study guide as we go over in
class today.
IGNEOUS
Igneous rocks are formed by cooling magma.
 The word igneous means “fire-made.”

METAMORPHIC ROCK
This rock is formed by limestone that has been
exposed to heat and pressure.
 Morph means to change form or shape.

SEDIMENTARY ROCK
This rock is formed underwater. It is made up of
bits of shells and skeletons of sea animals.
 It is also formed when tiny grains of sand are
cemented together.
 It is also formed when minerals dissolved in
water crystallize.

GEOLOGIST
A person who studies the Earth and its features
is called a geologist.
 A geologist also studies the rocks and minerals of
the Earth.

LUSTER

Luster is the way light is reflected off of an
object.
WEATHERING

Weathering occurs when rocks are broken down
into smaller pieces at the Earth’s surface.
EROSION

Erosion is when parts of the Earth’s surface are
washed or carried away due to wind, water, or
ice.
LAVA

Lava is the hot, molten, fluid material that
erupts from the volcano or a volcanic vent.
MAGMA

Magma is the hot, molten material deep inside
the Earth.
RELATIVE AGE
Relative age describes the age of something
compared with the age of another thing.
 Examples: younger, youngest, oldest, older

This woman is much older than this
woman.
NAME SOME PRODUCTS WE USE EVERYDAY
THAT COME FROM MINERALS
Talc- baby or talcum powder
 Fluorite- fluoride in your toothpaste
 Granite- kitchen counter tops
 Lithium- batteries
 Marble- building material for floors, pillars, and
bath tiles

THE ROCK CYCLE

The rock cycle is a never-ending process by which
rocks are changed from one type into another.
STREAK
Streak tests are easy tests helpful in mineral
identification.
 The streak is simply the color of the powdered
mineral.
