Microbes and diseases are risks. Children are not. The Vermont lawmakers are considering a bill (S.199/H.527) that aims to abolish philosophical exemption from vaccines for all Vermont schoolchildren, both public and private. If passed, parents would be stripped of the right to informed consent for an invasive medical procedure on their children. Vaccines have proven risks of serious reactions, including death, which are listed on package inserts. This is why federal law requires that vaccine information statements be given at the time of vaccination. According to sponsors of these bills, eliminating the philosophical exemption is for preservation of "herd immunity.” Those using the philosophical exemption were branded as, “free-riders” hiding in the herd by Representative George Till, during senate testimony. Because of this common belief about vaccine-herd immunity (promoted intensively by the health department, physicians, and the vaccine industry), people are quick to blame outbreaks of contagious diseases on those who are unvaccinated for a given disease. This happened when the cases of pertussis (whooping cough) were being diagnosed this winter here in Central Vermont. In reality, the great majority of those who become infected in pertussis outbreaks have already been vaccinated for the disease. One world authority (Dr. Fritz Mooi, a scientist with the Netherlands Center for Infectious Disease Control) states, “I think we are seeing that…vaccinated children, whom you would not expect to see get infected, get infected nevertheless." Even the CDC admits that pertussis is endemic and subject to cyclical epidemics, which are difficult to control through vaccination. Though it has been a sacred cow for decades, vaccine-induced herd immunity is wholly different from the gold-standard: natural immunity. Immunity conferred by immunization usually fades by 5-10 years after a shot, whereas permanent, life-long immunity is achieved only after natural infection. Consider the American Baby Boomers, whose protection from childhood vaccines wore off decades ago. Are they a risk? Why only children? Microbes and diseases are risks. Children are not risks. There are many different ways to build health and immunity and ultimately having healthy children is the goal we all share. The argument of vaccine-herd immunity is flawed and does not justify an attack on parents' rights.
