Activity 14 – How the heart works
Now that you can label the heart you can figure out how each section plays its part in
either pumping oxygenated blood around the body or pumping deoxygenated blood
to the lungs.

Blood travels AWAY from the heart
through ARTERIES,…

…and returns to the heart through
VEINS.
There are TWO separate Circulation
Systems;

One ‘loop’ carries blood from the
HEART to the LUNGS and then back to
the HEART …

… and the other carries blood from
the HEART to ALL OTHER PARTS OF
THE BODY and then back to the HEART.
Fill in the gaps in the statements below using the word bank over the page...
Oxygenated blood from the lungs to the rest of the body
Oxygenated blood travels from the lungs through the ________ and into the______
_________. Blood travels through the bicuspid valve into the left _______.The
heart then pumps the ___________ blood through the _________ to the rest of
the body.
Deoxygenated blood from the body to the lungs
Deoxygenated blood travels from the body back to the heart through the ________
_________ and into the _______ ________. Blood travels through _________
______ into the right ________. The heart then pumps the ___________ blood
through the ________ ___________ back to the lungs.

Deoxygenated Blood
•
The RIGHT SIDE of the heart
pumps blood which is LOW IN
OXYGEN to the LUNGS, to
pick up OXYGEN.
•
The LEFT SIDE of the heart
pumps blood which is RICH IN
OXYGEN to all other parts of
the BODY
Try and answer the questions below:
1. Which side of the heart has deoxygenated blood?

2. Why is the right side of the lungs low in oxygen?
