Hitler led Germany against the world. Fifty million people were killed in
World War II. The victorious Soviet Union claimed the eastern half of
Europe. Western Allies set their free-market capitalism against Soviet
communism, and the Cold War of ideas and threats lasted forty years.
Adolf
Hitler, a veteran of World War I, became chancellor of Germany
Hitler
in 1933 and claimed full autocratic power. In fiery speeches
promoting the Nazi ideals, he promised to revive the German
military, reclaim the lost territory, cleanse the German land of
undesirable people, and conquer Europe.
World
The German army invaded Austria and Czechoslovakia in 1938.
War II
In 1939, Poland was conquered in five weeks. France and Great
Britain declared war from the west and the Soviet Union joined
from the east. France fell to Germany in 1940. In early 1945,
massive Soviet armies pushed the German forces back, and
Allied armies pressed east to the Rhine River. In April 1945,
Hitler killed himself and the Germans surrendered.
Holocaust, In Greek, holo caust means whole burning, or complete
Genocide
destruction. Genocide is the systematic destruction of a race of
people. The Nazi policy was to completely destroy the Jewish
population of Europe. Six million Jews were killed—two-thirds
of European Jews—in an organized, government policy of forced
labor in concentration camps, and mass murder.
Eastern
Bloc is the French word for group. After the war, the Soviet
Bloc
Union claimed the eastern half of Germany, plus Poland,
Czechoslovakia, Romania, and Bulgaria. The German city of
Berlin was split in half by a giant wall. These countries were
forced to become communist and follow Soviet orders.
Cold
The capitalist, democratic free-market West, led by the US,
War
opposed the communist East, controlled by the Soviet Union.
For forty years, the two superpowers made the rest of the world
take sides; they both built up huge military forces; they
threatened to use nuclear weapons; but they never fought a war.
