Occidental College, Los Angeles
Marine Environmental Science
(Assistant Professor)
The Department of Biology at Occidental College invites applications for a tenure-track faculty
position in Marine Environmental Science at the Assistant Professor level. This full-time faculty
member will complement and strengthen our existing programs and offerings in
Environmental Sciences and Marine Biology. Candidates must have a commitment to
undergraduate teaching across the curriculum and implement a student-centered research
program. We envision that this new faculty member will develop both research and teaching
programs centered on the challenges of marine environmental sciences, including topics such
as the urban-ocean interface, restoration ecology, oceanography, climate change, and global
processes. The increasingly complex and interdisciplinary field of Marine Science is bursting
with data richness at a variety of scales from remote sensing to sophisticated microscale
experiments. Thus, preference will be given to applicants who are able to expand our offerings
in quantitative reasoning and computational analysis, statistics, hypothesis testing,
experimental design, and modeling. Optimally, these topics will include working with a variety
of coding packages (ex. R, Python, Perl, etc.).
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Biology or related field, and a strong commitment to
educating undergraduates through teaching and research. The successful candidate is
expected to a) participate in teaching an introductory- or intermediate-level biology course, as
well as an intermediate- or upper-level marine environmental science course each year,
b) develop a rigorous, externally fundable research program involving undergraduates, and
c) participate in regular service to the department and the College.
Occidental College is a nationally-ranked small liberal arts institution situated in Los Angeles.
The College has committed itself to the marine sciences for over 100 years, and its location
allows convenient access to marine research locations and facilities. The college also has a
strong commitment to the environmental sciences including Environmental Science
Concentrations within both the Biology and Geology majors. Oxy has a respected and
productive marine program, highlighted by the Vantuna Research Group, a leader in marine
research in the Southern California Bight. The College was a founding member of the Southern
California Marine Institute (SCMI), a marine facility in the Port of Los Angeles that provides a
home for both shore-based and offshore teaching and research activities. SCMI is currently
working with AltaSea and the Port of Los Angeles to build a state-of-the-art marine lab in San
Pedro, ~35 miles from campus.
Occidental is located in the culturally-rich Los Angeles neighborhoods of Eagle Rock and
Highland Park, near Caltech, the Jet Propulsion Lab, the Natural History Museum, and other
major research institutions. The College is committed to academic excellence in a diverse
community and supporting interdisciplinary and multicultural academic programs that
provide a gifted and diverse group of students with an educational experience that prepares
them for leadership in a pluralistic world. We, therefore, strongly encourage applications from
candidates who will further Occidental’s mission of excellence and equity in their teaching and
scholarship.
Applicants should submit the following: (1) a cover letter detailing your interest in teaching in
a liberal arts environment; (2) a statement of teaching philosophy, including how you will
support and enhance the College’s goal of building a strong educational environment in
classrooms that have an ethnically, socio-economically, and culturally diverse student body
(include teaching evaluations, evidence of effective advising, or other data, if available); (3) a
statement of research interests, including how students will participate in or benefit from your
research; (4) a Curriculum vitae; and (5) three letters of recommendation (request writers to
send separately). Application materials should be addressed to Dr. Shana Goffredi, Chair,
Marine Environmental Science Search, and sent by e-mail to [email protected]. Review of
applications will begin on October 2, 2016.
