Early Conflict
Early Romans were seen as
criminals, and came into
conflict with surrounding
groups such as the Latins,
the Etruscans, and the
Sabines
The intervention of the
Sabine women depicts the
end of a conflict and the
beginning of a time of
peace and inter-city
sharing

The Seven Kings of Rome
• Once Rome was founded it experienced about
200 years of kings (753 B.C. to 509 B.C.)
– Romulus was the first
– Tarquin the Proud
was the Last

Where did they get all this stuff?
• Romans borrowed many ideas and techniques
from their neighbors
– Greeks
– Latins
– Etruscans
– Sabines
Keep Greece in mind
• As you will see, the Romans borrowed heavily
from other cultures
• Keep in mind what we have learned in this
class as we move forward, and identify
similarities you see between the Romans and
other cultures we have discussed.
Birth of The Republic
Tarquin the Proud was overthrown in 509 B.C. and the Roman Republic was
founded.
Two Consuls were elected each year to rule along with a Senate
Both the Aristocracy and the Plebeians were given a voice in the Republican
Government
