The Emancipation Proclamation The Confederacy Gains Momentum • When the Union soldiers first tried to march into Virginia, they were beaten back • The Confederacy was than able to make their way into Maryland • The Confederacy was poised to continue North and potentially win the war The Battle of Antietam • McClellan didn’t follow right away when Lee retreated • First day at Antietam was the bloodiest day in the Civil War • The Union wins but they could have ended the whole war in 1862! The Aftermath • Lincoln fires McClellan who later goes on to run against Lincoln for president • “If McClellan won’t use the army, I would like to”—Lincoln • Lincoln is looking for that offensive strategy that McClellan just does not have The Emancipation Proclamation • Five days after Antietam, President Lincoln changed the aim of the war • With this proclamation he declared all slaves to be free • The war to save the Union became the war to end slavery The Battle of Vicksburg • In the spring of 1863 the Anaconda Plan was really starting to work • Vicksburg, Mississippi was a key point in the west to cut the South in half • Grant trapped the Southern army there until after 48 days they surrendered
