PLANT & FLOWER REFERENCE GUIDE
Ageratum
Flower heads are in clusters of lavender,
blue, pink, or white depending on cultivar (BNS is only offering the blue variety this year).
Growing in a mound-like habit, flowers bloom May through October. It is considered one of the
more dependable flowering annuals. Ageratum likes full sun or partial shade and in hot and dry
areas, light shade is preferred.
Allysum Alyssum is a fine-textured annual with white, pink, or
lavender flowers. The flowers are very fragrant and attract insects like butterflies and bees.
Alyssum grows very easily in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soils. It blooms from late
spring until frost and is a common bedding plant.
Asters Asters have grey-green foliage
at the base. Flowering stalks are stiffly upright with open sprays of
large deep lavender daisy like flowers with golden yellow centers.
Asters make perfect cut flowers and bloom from late summer
through late fall.
Begonia The Begonia is used as a bedding plant in shady
areas under trees, hanging baskets, or window boxes. Flowers can come in red, pink, rose,
orange and require a well-drained soil.
Celosia
Attractive large 12 inch plumes in a vibrant colorful
mix of brilliant yellows oranges, reds and hot pinks. These flowers are excellent for mass
plantings in beds or taller borders. Celosia prefers full sun.
Coleus Coleus are grown for their foliage. Coleus have
leaves from about 3-8" long and can be chartreuse, yellow, pink, white, red, maroon or green
with multiple leaf patterns. Plants prefer sun to light shade with well-drained, moist soil. Colors
are more vivid in partial shade. Coleus is used in beds, borders, edges, planter boxes, and
hanging baskets.
Cosmos Cosmos are delightful plants used as background
plants, or as cut flowers. Tolerating dry, porous soils and full sun, Cosmos bloom in the early
summer to frost and have flower colors of white, light pink, red, and rose.
Dahlia Dahlias bloom from midsummer to frost and have
nodding heads of all colors. Dahlias prefer sun or partial shade, with a well-drained, moist soil.
Dahlias are used as bedding plants and as cut flowers. The plants are generally easy to grow.
Dusty Miller Dusty Miller is commonly used for its foliage in
edging, beds, mixed borders, and baskets. The foliage is unique for its silvery gray-green woolly
leaves and yellow conspicuous flowers. Flowers should be deadheaded immediately for best
effect of foliage. Dusty Miller does well in full sun.
Geranium Geraniums are classic annuals with bright flowers that
bloom all summer long. Most geraniums are grown in flower beds, borders, containers, and
hanging baskets. They like full sun with moist, well-drained soil, and tolerate slight drying out of
the root zone.
Geranium (Martha Washington) These geraniums are
also known as Regal Geraniums, whose petals are not uniformly one shade of color . Regal
geraniums are also commonly grown in flower beds, borders and containers and like full sun.
Impatiens Impatiens grow best in moist soil and are used
around trees in shaded areas, patio planters, and hanging baskets. Flower hues are white, pink,
lavender, orange, red, and hot pink. The season of bloom is from early summer to frost.
Lobelia
Lobelia is used in edging, rock gardens, hanging
baskets, and window boxes, and flowers in spring. Flowers are blue or violet with a yellow
throat, and white and purple-red colors are available also. Lobelia should be grown in partial
shade in hot locations, or in full sun if the soil is kept moist. Lobelia will grow well if there is
adequate moisture.
Marigolds
Marigolds are often used as a bedding
plant, as well as for edging, backgrounds, and cut flowers. Marigolds are rarely disturbed by
insects or diseases and can tolerate dry conditions and full sun. Deadheading of spent flowers
greatly enhances the plant's appearance during flowering.
Pansies
Pansies are thin, with delicately overlapping
petals, and have usually two to three colors. Pansies are cool-season plants perfect for early
Spring planting blooms, but prefer sun to partial shade with cool, moist, well-drained soil.
Pansies also need to be well-watered and deadheaded for continued bloom.
Petunia
The petunia has fringed edges and a very
sweet fragrance, which is great to have in the garden all summer long . Petunias like partial
shade to full sun and light, well-drained soil. Petunias are best used in beds, flower boxes and
containers, deadheading produces more blooms.
Portulacca
Portulaccas are beautiful 1" to 2" rose-like, double,
brilliantly colored flowers blooming in red, cerise, rose pink, orange, yellow and white.
Portulaccas grow best in hot locations and climates. They look great in hanging baskets and rock
gardens. These low-growing plants make a wonderful groundcover, are very drought tolerant and
need to be watered only occasionally.
Salvia
Salvia is an erect plant with opposite to whorled
long leaves and square stems. The flowers grow as a spike, having a slight fragrance. The plant
blooms from midsummer to frost and is spectacular in cut flower arrangements, borders, and
beds.
Snapdragons
Snapdragons have a wide range of flower
colors, including purplish-red, bronze, lavender, red, pink, yellow, orange, and white. The
flowers bloom profusely from early summer to fall. Snapdragons require sun to partial shade,
with well-drained soil.
Vinca Rose
Vinca Rose have multiple single bloom
flowers with glossy green leaves and is commonly used in flower beds. It blooms beautifully
from the first warm days of late spring to the first frost in fall. Vinca Rose tolerate both sun and
partial shade.
Zinnias
Zinnias come in vibrant colors and make fantastic cut
flowers. The flowers bloom summer to first frost and prefer sunny spots. Deadheading of spent
flowers greatly enhances the plant's performance during flowering.
