Art in the Middle Ages
There were many
types and forms of art
produced in the
Middle Ages:
 Celtic art
 Romanesque art
 Islamic art
 Gothic art
 Lot’s of Celtic art
contains symmetry
 There are two
“customs” the Celts
used: Iron age and
Insular art
 The original Celtic work
came to a stop in the
Norman invasion in
1169-1170.
 Celtic art uses a variety
of styles
 This style of art refers
back to the style of the
Romans
 This type of art work
was made in the 1100’s
 Subjects were usually
religious
(people/places)
 The mural on the left is
on a domed ceiling and
it is of the Virgin Mary
and Baby Jesus
 The Muslims believed that
creating art is like looking in
a mirror-this is true for
Islamic art
 Their art shows their god
“Allah” because he is the
focus of their lives
 All good and evil come from
the Lord of all being “Allah”
 There is balance and
harmony of all things in their
art works
 Gothic art lasted about
200 years
 Gothic art told a story, in
it’s pictures
 Gothic art mediums
were sculpture, panel
painting, stained glass,
fresco, and manuscript
 The first Gothic art was
