GOTHIC ARCHITECTURE
ARH-399
PROF. HUTTERER
T/R 10:00-11:20AM
LA 166
Beginning around 1140 builders in northern Europe dramatically changed the design and
structure of their buildings as a result of social and cultural pressures, advancements in
technology, and a new economic prosperity. Today we call the resulting style of architecture
“Gothic.” This class will explore the relationship of major Gothic structures to the classical
and Romanesque past and to each other as we consider what commonalities, if any, are
shared between them. During the quarter we will examine both religious and secular
architecture, from soaring cathedrals to civic palaces, looking at Gothic building through
structural, constructional, religious, social, artistic, and economic lenses.
