5179 Gothic Literature - Mrs. Lehman Welcome to your eDynamic Gothic Literature class! My name is Mrs. Lehman, and I am responsible for grading your work and assisting you through this course. Below you will find important information relating to your course. It is very important that you email me at any time this year if you have a problem, question, or concern. Starting the Course You are responsible for beginning work in this course the day that the semester begins. If you are not on track when the progress reports are due, you will be given your current grade and the comment of “incomplete assignments” on your progress report. Failure to start coursework when required may result in a lower grade, an “incomplete” (which can affect National Honor Society status) or the filing of a truancy report. Homework: Homework questions/assignments are read and graded. These are worth 5-25 points. Please be sure to include the questions and answers in your word processing file (e.g., Microsoft Word file) when submitting your work to the drop box. Submit the work as one file attachment. You will attach the file using the drop box tool. Discussion Questions: Discussion questions are completed in a thread format and are worth 5 points. You will add a new thread for each question. Quizzes: Quizzes are scored by the eDynamic program and are worth 15 points. Midterm and Final Exam: These exams are scored by the eDynamic program and are worth 50 points. The Midterm exam is based on material from the first four units in the course. The final exam is based on units five through eight. All exam grades will go into SV Gradebook at the appropriate grading period. Units of Study: There are eight total units of study for this course. The units of study are summarized below. These units are subject to change throughout the school year. Course Description: From vampires to ghosts, these frightening stories have influenced fiction writers since the 18th century. This course will focus on the major themes found in Gothic literature and demonstrate how the core writing drivers produce, for the reader, a thrilling psychological environment. Terror versus horror, the influence of the supernatural, and descriptions of the difference between good and evil are just a few of the themes presented. By the time students have completed this course, they will have gained an understanding of and an appreciation of the complex nature of dark fiction. Unit 1: Gothica: When Gruesome is Delicious Unit 2: Frankenstein: A Monster is Born Unit 3: Frankenstein: With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility Unit 4: Jekyll & Hyde: To Thine Ownself Be True Unit 5: Gothic Poetry: Love from Beyond the Grave Unit 6: Dracula: The Blood is the Life Unit 7: Dracula: The Hunter Becomes the Hunted Unit 8: Edgar Allan Poe: The Monsters In Us Class Reflection Discussion Assignment eDynamic provides you with a course calendar, announcements page, and a “Due Soon” feature all of which should help you stay on track in order to finish by your target date. Please utilize the suggested timeframes in this calendar. To be successful in the class, you must put in the required hours for working and follow the due dates.
