Propaganda
• Propaganda is a form of communication
aimed towards influencing the attitude of a
population toward some cause or position.
Influences
• Propaganda is information that is used
primarily to influence an audience and further
an agenda, often by presenting facts
selectively (thus possibly lying by not telling
the full truth), or using complex messages to
produce an emotional rather than rational
response. Propaganda can be used as a form
of ideological or commercial warfare.
Stalin
• Joseph Stalin's regime built the largest fixed-wing aircraft of the
1930s, Tupolev ANT-20, exclusively for this purpose.
• It was equipped with a powerful radio set called "Voice from the
sky", printing and leaflet-dropping machinery, radio stations,
photographic laboratory, film projector with sound for showing
movies in flight, library, etc.
• The aircraft could be disassembled and transported by railroad if
needed. The giant aircraft set a number of world records.

Propaganda in Animal Farm
• Manipulation of speech through a character
named Squealer, a pig who acted as a
spokesperson for Napoleon.
• One example of Squealer’s use of propaganda to
gain the animals’ support can be seen in his
speech denouncing snowball part in the rebellion
after he was banished from the farm.
• Squealer has used propaganda to manipulate the
memories of the animals so they would believe
that Napoleon is the rightful person to trust and
Snowball was actually on the side of the enemy.

Squealer
. Squealer gives reasons why the pigs
need the apples and milk and how it is for the
good of everyone. Re-read the last paragraph of
page 22 and the first 2 of page 23 for Squeeler’s
propaganda.
• Says that the The Windmill was Napeolean’s idea,
calls Snowball a traitor, says bravery isn't enough
and that loyalty and obedience is most
important.
