Unit Two: The Classical World and the rise of Christianity and Islam In this unit we will study the Classical era civilizations of Persia, Greece, and Rome all of which form the foundations of what is often called “Western Civilization.” We will look at the collapse of the Roman Empire and Europe’s Medieval Ages. We will look at philosophical, political, and religious trends throughout this era including the beginnings of and expansion of Christianity and Islam. We will investigate international systems of trade and the spread of ideas. Tuesday, September 15: pg. 116-124 (The Rise of the Greeks) What characterized Minoan and Mycenaean ways of life? How did Greece’s geography affect the development and character of Greek city-states? How did the presence of tyranny lead to the development of Greek democracy? Why was Sparta militaristic?
