Thecourseisintendedforsophomores(Classof2019)enrollingintheEnergyStudies
MultidisciplinaryAcademicProgramandfornon-sciencemajorswithstrongbackgroundinmath
andscience.Thiscoursestudiesthetechnology,use,andimpactsofenergyontheenvironment,
climate,securityandeconomy,andemphasizetheapplicationofscientificreasoningand
quantitativeanalysistounderstandtheseimpacts.
Asoneofthemajorrequirementsforthecourse,studentswillbedividedintoteamsto
formulateandstudyenergyprojectssuitablefortestingontheYalecampus,andwillcomplete
reportsandaposterpresentationontheirproposedprojectsduringReadingPeriod.The
project-basedcourseworkwillbedoneincollaborationwiththeYaleOfficeofFacilitiesand
OfficeofSustainability.

Thisseminarwillstudytherisksandopportunitiesofclimatechangefromaquantitativeperspective.
Topicswillrangefromtheuseofhigh-resolutionregionalclimatemodelstobetterquantifytheeffects
ofglobalwarming onlocalcommunities,totheglobalprospectsforpublicandprivatefinancein
decarbonizingtheworldenergysystems.Wewilllookatexamplesfromaroundtheworld,including:the
developmentofhigh-resolutionregionalclimatemodelstoassessdetailedclimateimpacts;thepricingof
carbonindifferentways(thecarbontaxinBritishColumbia,thecarbonmarketinChinaandtheYale
CarbonCharge);thefinancingandprogressoftheGermanEnergiewende;andtheoverallenergy
investmentanalysismadebytheInternationalEnergyAgency(IEA)foritsWorldEnergyOutlook2016.
