Functional English Verb Verbs are the words that show some action. Verbs are the words that tell or assert something about a nouns/pronouns. It is considered to be the most important part of a sentence. Importance of Verb in a Sentence Verb is the most important part of a sentence because a sentence can not convey its meaning without a verb. It makes the fragments a meaningful whole. For example: He and his brother Lahore The use of went makes the sentence meaningful ad combine these fragments. Classification of Verbs Verbs are classified into: 1. Main verbs transitive verbs intransitive verbs 2. Auxiliary verbs or Be verbs Main Verbs Transitive verbs A transitive verb is a verb that denotes an action which passes over from subject to an object. Intransitive Verb An intransitive verb is a verb that denotes an action which does not passes over from subject to an object. Auxiliaries and Modals Auxiliaries These are the verbs that are used with main verbs to make tenses, passive forms, negatives and interrogatives. Be(is,am,are), have and do are auxiliary verbs Conti….. Modals They are used with ordinary or main verbs to convey meanings of permission, possibility certainty and necessity. Can-could, may-might, will-would, shallshould, must and ought are called modals Conti.…. Modals are often called modal auxiliaries. Modals are often called defective verbs because some parts are wanting in them as they don’t have –s and –ing forms.
