Examples: blue, thirty, kind, scary, fast Articles: a, an, the Definition: shows action or state of being Action Verb: shows action Note: Ask yourself, can someone or something do this? State of Being Verb: Any form of the verb be Helping Verb: these verbs come before an action verb to “help” it. Note: there is a specific list of words that are helping verbs Linking Verb: links the subject of the sentence to the rest of the sentence; does not show action Note: there is a specific list of words that are linking verbs Examples: sing, dance, cry, run, etc. Examples: am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been Examples: is, am, are, was, were, be, being, been, has, have, had, do, does, did, will, shall, should, would, can, could, may, might, must Examples: any form of the verb be; appear, feel, grow, look, prove, remain, smell, sound, taste, and turn 5 Adverb Definition: modifies (describes) verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs Note: answers the questions when? or where? Examples: slowly, always, very, really, correctly, surprisingly, not, etc. 6 Preposition Definition: indicates location or a relationship Note: With prepositions, you just have to learn to recognize it; later in the year, you will receive a longer list of prepositions. Examples: about, at, by, for, from, in, of, on, to, with, etc. 7 Conjunction Definition: connects words, phrases, and clauses Examples: FANBOYS— for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so 8 Interjection Definition: a word that shows emotion and is interjected into the sentence; it is not related grammatically to anything else in the sentence. Note: To show a lot of emotion, use an exclamation mark. To show less emotion, use a comma to connect to the sentence. Examples: Ouch! Wow! Bam! Yay! Wait! Wow, I didn’t expect that. vs. Wow!
