PARTS OF SPEECH 1. NOUN- names a person, place, thing, or idea (proper nouns/ common nouns) (Can be an abstract idea – freedom, love) 2. PRONOUN- takes the place of a noun (golden list) HE, SHE, IT, HIM, HER, THEY, THEM, I, ME, WE, US, YOU, (personal) myself, yourself, ourselves, himself, herself, itself, (reflexive) THIS, THAT, THESE, THOSE (demonstrative) each, another, one, anybody, either, everybody, nobody, no one, somebody, someone, (indefinite) WHO, WHOSE, WHOM, WHICH, WHAT (interrogative) his, hers, theirs, yours, ours (possessive) 3. ADJECTIVE- describes (modifies) a noun or pronoun Answers questions- Which one? What kind? How many? (ie. large, red shiny, delicious) 4. VERB- an action word, or a state of being Verbs that express state of being, or can be used as linking verbs, or can be used as helpers with action verbs (yellow list): IS, ARE, WAS, WERE, HAVE, HAS, HAD, DO, DOES, DID, BE, BEING, BEEN, CAN, COULD, SHALL, SHOULD, WILL, WOULD, MAY, MIGHT, MUST, AM appear, feel, smell, seem, sound, taste, become, grow, remain look, stay, turn, (Linking verbs / or action) (green list) Verb phrase- the main verb and all its helpers 5. ADVERB- describes (modifies) a verb, adverb, or a adjective Answers the questions – How? When? Where? How much? (To what degree) (Often ends in –ly) ALWAYS, AGAIN, ALMOST, ALSO , ALREADY, AWAY, EVEN, EVER, HERE, JUST, LATER, NEVER, NOT, NOW, OFTEN, PERHAPS, QUITE, SELDOM, SO , SOMEWHAT, SOON, THEN, THERE, TODAY, TOO, VERY, EVERYWHERE PARTS OF SPEECH PREPOSTION- a word used with a noun or pronoun, that shows the relationship between the noun or pronoun and some other word in the sentence (many are 2 letter words) (orange list) ABOUT, ABOVE, ACROSS, AFTER, AGAINST, ALONG, AMONG, AROUND, AS, AT, BEFORE, BEHIND, BELOW, BESIDE, BETWEEN, BEYOND, BUT (except), BY, DOWN, DURING, EXCEPT, FOR, FROM, IN, INTO, LIKE, NEAR, OF, OFF, ON, OPPOSITE, OUT, OVER, SINCE, THROUGH, TILL, TO, TOWARD, UNDER, UP, WITH, according to, because of, ahead of, in spite of, next to, (compound prepositions) *Prepositions are only prepositions when used in a phrase (-to the stadium) 7. CONJUNCTION- connects words or groups of words AND, BUT, OR, FOR, NOR, SO, YET (coordinating) Both/and either/or neither/nor not only/ but also (correlative) ***(subordinating conjunctions) - can create fragments if used incorrectly AFTER, ALTHOUGH, AS, BECAUSE, EVEN THOUGH, IF, SINCE, UNTIL, WHEN, WHERE, WHILE, SO THAT 8. INTERJECTIONS- expresses strong feelings or emotions Wow! Oh! Ouch! Well! (Oh, I can’t believe it!)
