MODIFIERS
AKA- Pimp my sentence
FIRST THING TO KNOW (SO WRITE THIS DOWN)
All sentences need to have a noun/pronoun (naming word) and a verb (what it is
doing). So we need to know what we are talking about and what it does.
So
“He ran to the bus.” is a sentence
Pronoun Verb
Noun
“I cheese potato.” is not, because you cannot ‘cheese’ it’s a noun
Noun
Noun
BUT A CORRECT SENTENCE CAN STILL BE BORING.
“He ran to the bus.” is quite dull, there is a verb and a noun but I
can add bits, MODIFY them to make them better.
Ran > Ran quickly through the rain
Verb
adverb
preposition
Subordinate noun
All of this MODIFIES the verb “Ran” because it tells us more
about how he “Ran”
YOU ALSO MODIFY NOUNS.
“He ran to the bus.” is quite dull, there is a verb and a noun but I
can add bits, MODIFY them to make them better.
Bus > Rusty old bus
Noun
Adjectives
All of this MODIFIES the noun bus because it shows us what
kind of bus it is.
MODIFIERS CAN MAKE IT BETTER.

MAKE SURE YOU REMEMBER THIS BIT
He ran quickly through the rain to the rusty old bus.
Modified
word
MODIFIER
This modifier comes after
the word, so it can be a
‘post’ modifier.
MODIFIER
Modified
word
This modifier comes before
the word, so it can be a
‘pre’ modifier.
WORDS CAN HAVE PRE AND POST MODIFIERS
“the rickety old bus which was late once again”
“He pushed on and ran quickly through the rain”
You can have nouns which modify nouns and verbs which modify
verbs, the goal is when you look at a sentence is to spot what the
main noun and main verb are, what the sentence is about, don’t
worry if in a complex sentence there are more than one.
COPY THE SENTENCES AND UNDERLINE THE MODIFIERS
AND CIRCLE THE KEY NOUN AND VERB
1. Rain badly damaged the crops.
2. The red hat with the black feather was for sale.
3. The old paper full of writing was burning in the fire.
4. The tough table rocked slowly from the blow.
Now create 4 of your own, remember to circle and underline as you
go.
