ROMAN ART
By: Holden Graves
WHAT WAS ROMAN ART LIKE
•
The Romans art was a lot like the Greeks. They placed Greek-style statues
in their homes and public buildings. There art was very detailed and very
beautiful. They usually used marble to carve there sculptures.
ROMAN ART
•
Roman art is a very broad topic, spanning almost 1,000 years and three
continents, from Europe into Africa and Asia. The first Roman art can be
dated back to 509 B.C.E., with the legendary founding of the Roman
Republic, and lasted until 330 C.E. (or much longer, if you include Byzantine
art). Roman art also encompasses a broad spectrum of media including
marble, painting, mosaic, gems, silver and bronze work, and terracottas,
just to name a few. The city of Rome was a melting pot, and the Romans
had no qualms about adapting artistic influences from the other
Mediterranean cultures that surrounded and preceded them.

ENGINEERING AN EMPIRE
By Michael Romines
CAESARS BRIDGE
•
In 55 b.c, Julius Caesar lead 8 legions, about 40,000 troops, North through Gaul. He
wanted to cross the Rhine river, and nobody have ever crossed it with an army fit for
conquest. He had to cross it with a bridge 4 football fields long and 40 feet across;it
had to be strong enough to hold 40,000 troops. His troops did this in only 10 days.
The force on the other side, 10 times the size of the Romans, ran when they saw the
Romans cross. When the Romans came back, they took down the bridge so no one
could cross it.
THE FLAVIAN AMPHITHEATER
•
Also known as The Coliseum, it was built after Nero killed himself and Vespasian
took over. It was the tallest building in Rome, and could hold 70,000 people
comfortably. It had 110 drinking fountains, and 2 bathroom, big enough for a packed
house. It also had a retractable roof that shaded the seats. They were able to build it
only because of arches. The arches could hold just as much as a wall, but cut costs
by half.
WHAT I LIKE ABOUT ROME
