The periodic table can give you a great deal of information about the
composition of an atom.
• The atomic number is equal to the number of protons.
• The atomic mass is equal to the number of protons plus
neutrons.
• In a neutral atom, the number of protons is equal to the number
of electrons.
• When an atom is in a charged state (ion) the charge indicates
the imbalance between protons and electrons.
• Too many electrons and the charge is negative.
• Too few electrons and the charge is positive.
