What Are Verbs?
• A verb is a word that tells what
people or things do.
• Verbs are words that show action.
Examples
• She rode on the bus.
• The train leaves at three o’clock.

Verbs In The Present
• A verb that tells about an action that
is happening now is in the present
time.
Verbs in the present have two forms
• The correct form depends on what
the subject of the sentence is.
Add -s to the verb when the noun in the
subject is singular.
• Examples:
– The dog barks at the snowman.
– Jill laughs.
Do not add -s to the verb when the
noun in the subject is plural.
• Examples:
• The boys shovel.
• Their parents start the car.

Verbs In The Present
• Most verbs in the present end with
-s. Add -es to the verbs that end with
s, sh, ch, ss, or x when they are used
with a singular noun. Do not add -es

– The girls fish.
– Emily mixes the salad.
– Friends mix the salad.
• Some verbs end with a consonant and y.
Change the y to i and add -es when you use
this kind of verb with a singular noun.
• Examples:
– carry + es = carries
– hurry + es = hurries

Verb To Be
The verbs am, is, are, was, and were are
