Title: Technical Stage Manager Department: Responsible to: Production Head of Production Located in Glasgow’s Merchant City, Tron Theatre consists of a 230 seat auditorium, a 50 capacity studio/rehearsal space, Education Suite/rehearsal space, Victorian Bar/ performance space, dressing rooms, a ‘get-in’ area, café bar area, a box office and office accommodation for administration and production staff. Tron Theatre is both a producing company and a receiving house. We aim to produce a number of Tron Theatre Company productions and occasional coproductions each year. We focus on new work and contemporary classic theatre whether through our own productions or visiting companies. The Tron is a cultural hub for local artists and much support is given to emerging theatre companies and the platforming of new projects. Tron Theatre Company occasionally tours work nationally and internationally. The main responsibilities of the role are: To co-ordinate all set builds / stage logistics for all Tron Theatre productions both in the Main Theatre & the Changing House Studio Theatre, managing budgets & schedules alongside the Head of Production. To co-ordinate and deliver all Tron Theatre fit ups & strikes alongside Tron Theatre Production staff and casual crew in conjunction with the Head of Production. To co-ordinate all visiting company get ins & get outs for Main Theatre and Changing House Studio Theatre where required. To accept delegated responsibilities from the Head of Production in their absence. To work with the Head of Production to ensure the efficient and safe running of the production department with primary responsibility for matters relating to stages, rigging, flying and construction of productions (in-house and visiting) To assist the Head of Production in the areas of Health & Safety and monitoring safe working practices across all performance spaces and productions To assist the Head of Production in the on-going development of the Department’s Health & Safety requirements – including, record keeping, generic and show related risk assessments, method statements etc. To assist the Stage Manager & Technical team where required. To help to create a cohesive and supportive environment within the Production Department and throughout the Tron. In detail : In –House Productions To work closely with the Head of Production on the staging / production requirements of in-house productions, working within the given budgets and to assist in scheduling of fit-up and production weeks. In particular, set design, set logistics, construction methods, build periods, flying, rigging and all H&S matters arising from the design process. To attend production meetings with the Director and Designers. In conjunction with the Head of Production, run all Tron Theatre Productions’ set fit ups and manage casual staff in the working environment. To assist in the hiring and /or borrowing of necessary stage and technical equipment, set items, furniture etc for in-house productions and for its safe and prompt return. Act as Project Manager for productions / festivals as designated by the Head of Production. Visiting Companies To assist the Head of Production in contacting visiting companies, ensuring their production, stage and staffing requirements are met on as high a professional standard as possible. To assess the competency and safety of all visiting companies, analysing their risk assessments and method statements. To welcome visiting companies, assisting with Get-ins, fit-ups, assessing all work carried out and assisting with get-outs. To be responsible, with the Head of Production, for evaluating the competency of visiting company staff in their use of rigging & set logistics. Risk assessing their methods of erecting set items and rigging techniques and ensuring that the equipment used is within the current Health and Safety regulations. To ensure visiting companies are aware of Health & Safety, security and fire procedures. Staffing To supervise all casual stage crew staff, work placements, students and any other freelance staff working in any Tron Theatre environment. To provide support to the Stage Manager & Technical team during busy periods. Fire Safety / Health & Safety To assist the Head of Production in the ongoing development of the department’s H&S requirements – including record keeping, generic and show related risk assessments, method statements etc To ensure all fire-exits are unlocked and fire escapes are clear at all times. Also that the fire alarms within the theatre are isolated when necessary. The TSM is a designated Fire-Officer for the Production Department and must observe the set down fire procedures. To be responsible for checking and locking up the theatre and backstage areas at the end of the working day. Also, when required, to lock and alarm the building when working outside café bar hours. To undertake / oversee regular inspection of all rigging / flying / access equipment. General To take on responsibilities from the Head of Production either in their absence or delegated responsibilities during busy times. This may include administration – timesheets, budget monitoring, petty cash, rota amendments and/or Project Management of Productions, festivals, events. To assist the Head of Production in the day to day running / upkeep of the building and all its equipment & spaces, notifying the Head of Production of faulty or damaged equipment. Specific responsibilities to include the workshop and lifting equipment. To assist the Head of Production & Stage Manager in organising props, wardrobe and scenery stores and in the lending out and receipt of borrowed items from Tron stock. To undertake a schedule of repairs, improvements & inspections during our annual maintenance period. To attend regular meetings with the Head of Production to: o Organise schedules to work around normal working hours wherever possible o Provide reasonable warning of potential overtime costs which must be approved by the Head of Production and the General Manager o Discuss forthcoming events and evaluate past events o Discuss ideas to improve the efficiency and working environment of the building o To assist and operate a schedule of regular maintenance and record keeping for all stage/rigging/access equipment and where required technical equipment. Take responsibility for identifying areas for investment in new equipment to ensure the continual improvement / advancement of the production Dept / Tron Theatre. To implement best working practice for the Company’s Green Commitment. Any other duties as required by the Head of Production.
