Introduction to Quadrilaterals Questions from this lesson taken from Guide to Effective Instruction in Math 4-6; Geometry & Spacial Sense, Gr. 6 Learning Activity Math Learning Goal: • I can describe the properties of quadrilaterals. 60 min Grade 6 Materials Big Ideas: • Shapes of different dimensions and their properties can be described mathematically. Curriculum Expectations: • sort and classify quadrilaterals by geometric properties related to symmetry, angles, and sides, through investigation using a variety of tools and strategies Part One: Mind’s On 5 min. Think-Pair-Share •Mystery Design: Who Am I? • question posted on smart board or chart paper Pairs: Part 2: Action! •students are provided with a handout of quadrilaterals (attached) and are given the following task: •Sort these quadrilaterals using two or more attributes. Explain the strategy you used. 35 min. Hip Pocket Question: Label the angles of the quadrilaterals. • chart paper cut into halves and markers for students to use • questions on smart board for students to refer to • handout of shapes from Geometry Guide (see attached) Pairs / Whole Group: Bansho • teacher will ask questions to pull out the Part 3: mathematical understanding Consolidate/ • some of these questions might include the Debrief following: • What attributes did you use to sort? (angles, symmetry, edges, vertices, etc.) • What strategy did you use to sort? (Venn 20 min Diagram, Chart, etc.) • What types of angles did you use to sort? (90o, reflex, acute, obtuse). 5 min Practice Activity Students will be given the following questions for practice: Math Makes Sense Grade 6 Text: pg. 88 #s 1 and 2. • handout with question for practice
