WHODUNNIT Wednesday 14 to Saturday 24 SEPTEMBER 2016 And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie Presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH LTD You really have to admit that Agatha Christie was a woman who knew how to plot. She was the mistress of the carefully laid clue, the chance remark that ends up bursting with importance, the red herring, the redder red herring, the unexpected development, the sleight of hand, the sudden murderous twist. This being a whodunnit, beans must not be spilled. Suffice to say, ten strangers are marooned in a grand house on an island, cut off from the mainland by stormy seas - and they quickly find their lives in danger. Someone plans to kill them, one by one, but who, why and how? Let’s not take it TOO seriously, this is certainly the kind of story that satirical spoof can only enhance through the key whodunit tools of surprise and shock!! The sense of doom is built up brilliantly, with a menacing accusation that everyone in the house is suspected of one murder or another. And then the killings begin….. PERIOD DRAMA Wednesday 2 to Saturday 12 NOVEMBER 2016 The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams Presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH LTD A drama of great tenderness, charm and beauty, The Glass Menagerie is one of the most famous plays of the modern theatre. Amanda Wingfield is a faded, tragic remnant of Southern gentility now living in poverty in a dingy St. Louis apartment with her son, Tom and her daughter, Laura. Amanda strives to give meaning and direction to her life and the lives of her children, though her methods are ineffective and irritating. Tom is driven nearly to distraction by his mother’s nagging and seeks escape in alcohol and the world of the movies. Laura also lives in her illusions. The crux of the action comes when Tom invites a young man of his acquaintance to have dinner with the family. How will a visitor from the outside world interact with this fragile world of illusion? FAMILY ADVENTURE Wednesday 7 to Saturday 17 DECEMBER 2016 e Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis RSC adaptation by Adrian Mitchell Presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH LTD The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, an adaptation of C.S Lewis’ classic children’s story, is the tale of four children evacuated from London during the Blitz to the home of a mysterious professor. While exploring the house, they stumble across a wardrobe containing a gateway to another world and the adventure begins. The land of Narnia is under the spell of the wicked White Witch, and very quickly the four find themselves caught up in a deadly struggle between good and evil. Director: David Kirk Director: Mervyn Button, assisted by Ian Wilson Director: Damien O’Keeffe In the Wharfeside Theatre In the Wharfeside Theatre In the Wharfeside Theatre MODERN COMEDY DRAMA MODERN COMEDY Di AND Viv and Rose Wednesday 18 to Saturday 28 JANUARY 2017 Tuesday 7 to Saturday 11 FEBRUARY 2017 Entertaining Angels Amateur production by arrangement with NICK HERN BOOKS by Richard Everett Presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH LTD As a clergy wife, Grace has spent a lifetime on her best behaviour. Now, following the death of her husband Bardolph, she is enjoying the new-found freedom to do and say exactly as she pleases. But the return of her eccentric missionary sister Ruth, together with some disturbing revelations, force Grace to confront the truth of her marriage. Sharp-edged wit and poignant humour asks whether God can be trusted or is ‘the whole thing a divine exercise in trial and error?’ Director: Julia O’Keeffe In the Wharfeside Theatre by Amelia Bullmore Three women join forces at university. Life is fun. Living is intense. Together they feel unassailable. Written by Amelia Bullmore, prolific writer for TV and radio and creator and star of ITV’s Scott & Bailey, Di and Viv and Rose is an effervescent and sharply-observed comedy, crackling with wisdom and wit as it explores the impact of friendship on life and the impact of life on friendship. Director: Denise MacGregor In the Wildman Studio CONTEMPORARY SHAKESPEARE Romeo and Juliet Wednesday 8 to Saturday 18 MARCH 2017 by William Shakespeare “For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo” A young cast present a contemporary interpretation of Shakespeare’s tragic story of teenage love destroyed by feuding families, violence and loss. This classic tale is made accessible to modern audiences through the incorporation of 21st century technology, live music and dramatic fights set alongside the beauty of Shakespeare's original language. A production which will resonate with audience members of any age! Director: Miranda Armitage In the Wharfeside Theatre COMEDY DRAMA Wednesday 19 to Saturday 29 APRIL 2017 Getting On by Alan Bennett Presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH LTD Getting On is one of Alan Bennett’s earliest plays. Produced in 1971, when the action takes place, the writing is sharp, perceptive, analytical and funny – in other words, quintessentially Bennett. It won the Evening Standard award for Best Comedy that year. While we laugh, his characters are exploring our British obsessions, prejudices and institutions. George Oliver is the central character, a middle-aged Labour MP with a younger wife and family. George may be getting on in his career but isn’t getting on so well with family, friends and the neighbours who surround him. Director: Jacquie Howard In the Wharfeside Theatre COMEDY DRAMA Tuesday 9 to Saturday 13 MAY 2017 Two by Jim Cartwright Presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH LTD Over the course of an evening in a typical Northern pub, prepare to become acquainted with your less-than-genial hosts and the array of colourful personalities who regularly pull up a stool. Two actors play fourteen characters, who collect to share their tales. Central to it all are the Landlord and Landlady, bound together by a need to keep their business afloat while harbouring a dark and unspoken secret that threatens to tear their fragile relationship apart. Director: Rachel Conyers In the Wildman Studio MUSICAL Kiss Me, Kate Monday 5 to Saturday 17 JUNE 2017 Music & Lyrics by Cole Porter Book by Sam and Bella Spewack Amateur production by arrangement with Musicscope and Stage Musicals Ltd of New York The dazzling classic Broadway musical Kiss Me, Kate is brought to the Playhouse by the creative team that brought you High Society and Betty Blue Eyes. This exuberant showwithin-a-show throws together gun-toting gangsters, sparring actors and romantic entanglements against a backdrop of a touring musical production of The Taming of the Shrew. With songs by Cole Porter, the story is shot through with wit, charm, and some spectacular choreography. Though the effervescent wit of Porter’s songs is the star attraction, Sam and Bella Spewack’s book crackles with comic energy and great one-liners, while there are moments of tenderness and hurt amid the dizzy joie-devivre. Nights at the theatre don’t often come more enjoyable than this! PERIOD DRAMA Wednesday 12 to Saturday 22 JULY 2017 The Deep ILKLEY PLAYHOUSE Blue Sea by Terence Rattigan Presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH LTD Perhaps the best known of Terence Rattigan’s plays, The Deep Blue Sea is currently enjoying something of a revival. This is the story of her tempestuous affair and the breakdown of her marriage, which begins to emerge. Hester must confront the future when she finds Freddie disappoints her hopes for their relationship.
