1. When did the Battle take place?
1. The Battle of Fort Sumter started on April 12th 1861 and it ended on April
14th 1861.
2. Where is Fort Sumter?
1. Fort Sumter is a fort off the coast of South Carolina. It is in the Charleston
Harbor, and it controlled the entrance of Charleston.
3. Why did the North want to occupy Fort Sumter?
1. The Union still wanted control of Fort Sumter because they did not like the
fact that South Carolina seceded from the Union. The fort was Federal
property.
4. Why did the South want to attack Fort Sumter?
1. South Carolina wanted Union soldiers to leave the fort because they
believed that the Fort now belonged to them. They did not want the Union
to continue to interfere with their affairs.
5. Who were the main people in charge?
1. Major Robert Anderson was in charge of the Union forces inside of Fort
Sumter. Brigadier General P. G. T. Beauregard was in command of the
Confederate forces in Charleston.
6. Lincoln’s intervention
1. The soldiers in Fort Sumter needed supplies, and the first crisis of the
Lincoln administration was to resupply Fort Sumter. He notified South
Carolina that he was going to send more soldiers and more food to Fort
Sumter.
7. Confederate Ultimatum
1. The governor of South Carolina did not approve of this. He demanded that
the Union soldiers leave Fort Sumter, or that he would attack immediately.
Major Anderson refused to leave.
8. Confederate Bombardment
1. Beginning at 4:30 AM, Confederate forces started to bombard Fort
Sumter. The Union forces were vastly outnumbered.
9. Evacuation of Fort Sumter
1. After 34 hours, the Union had no choice, but to evacuate the fort.
10. Results of the Battle
1. There were no deaths that were directly caused by the battle.
11. Support for more military action
1. After the battle, there was widespread support for further military action
from both sides. President Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers to fight for
the Union. As a result of the Confederacy defeating the Union in battle,
four other States seceded from the Union. In total, 11 states had now
seceded from the Union.
12. The Civil War has begun
1. This was the battle that set the Civil War into motion. The Civil War has
begun.
