EcosystemEcology Ͷͻ͵͵Ȁͻ͵ʹ ͵ ǡʹͲͳ͵ You’velearnedbiology, chemistry, andphysicalscience. Howdotheyfittogether? 9 Bears or bacteria: who regulates nitrogen cycles across the planet? 9 Can plant growth to absorb excess CO2 from the atmosphere? Are enough nutrients available to support this plant growth? 9 Are biofuel crops in Iowa related to fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico? 9 How do we answer these questions using isotopes, computational modeling, new microbial technologies, whole-ecosystem manipulations, & advanced geosciences? We will discuss flows of energy and matter among plants, animals, and microorganisms, and among soils, water, and the atmosphere. This course emphasizes primary literature to explore theories and tools in ecosystem ecology. referencelake wholeͲecosystem nutrientenrichment Students will lead discussions of primary literature articles; actively participate in discussions; complete assignments related to understanding the readings; and conduct a class project.
