• was a BAROQUE ERA composer
• was a deeply religious man who expressed his worship of God
through his music
• his parents both died when he was 9 years old, and he went to live
with his older brother, Christoph
• at age 15 he became a member of the choir at St. Michael’s
church in Luneberg
• he studied organ, violin, clavichord, and composition
• was married and had 7 children with his first wife. When she
died, he remarried and had 13 more children – he had 20 children
altogether
• he wrote MANY pieces including Toccata and Fugue for organ,
Mass in B Minor, and The Passion According to St. Matthew
• some of his more familiar works include the Brandenburg
Concertos, Magnificat in D Major, Bist du bei Mir, Sheep May
Safely Graze, Little Fugue in G Minor and Jesu Joy of Man’s
Desiring
• died in Leipzg, Germany on July 28, 1750
