Setting the
Stage
While religion played an important role in
Roman society, the worship of Roman
gods was impersonal and often practiced
without a great deal of emotion. As the
empire grew, so, too, did a new religion
called Christianity. Born as a movement
within Judaism, it emphasized a personal
relationship between God and people
and attracted many Romans.
Judea
was made a province of the
Roman Empire
but according to
biblical tradition
a
Messiah would arrive
to
Restore the kingdom of the jews
Jesus Nazareth
who was
Baptized by John
who according to the gospels
Was born in the year 6 or 4 B.C.
and
who preached for 3 years
about
Monotheism
10 commandments
Love of God
Eternal Kingdom
The Gospels
were written by
The Apostles
and according to them
Jesus’ fame grew
and this
Concerned the Romans
so he was
Arrested and crucified
by orders of
The Roman governor Pontius Pilate
and according to the gospels
He ascended into heaven
and that is why we know him as
Jesus Christ
from the greek
Christos
which means
Saviour
Strengthened
by the conviction
That Jesus triumphed over death
a
New religion was born
it
Grew slowly and steadily
thanks to the influence of
Paul
who dedicated his life to
Spread and interpret Christ’s teachings
in a series of letters called
Epistles
where he declared that
Jesus was the Son of God
Christians did not have
to follow Jewish law
Because of a series of jewish revolts
the
Romans invaded Jerusalem
and
Destroyed the temple
about
500 000 jews were killed
and
The Diaspora took place
Because the Christians refused
to
Worship roman gods
they were considered as
Opposition to roman rule
and the
Persecution intensified
and
Thousands were killed
and some were regarded as
martyrs
Despite persecution
Christianity became a
powerful force
because it
Offered a personal
relationship with a
loving God.
Embraced all people
Gave hope to the
powerless.
Condemned the
extravagances of
imperial Rome
Promised eternal life
after death.
A critical moment in Christianity
was when
Constantine
declared in the
Edict of Milan 313
that
Christianity was legal
and later when
Theodosius
made it the
Official religion in the year 380
The Christian Religion
established
A structure
in which
Priests
were at the local level and
Bishops
supervised several local churches, like
Peter
in
Rome
where he was considered the first
Pope
As Christianity grew
some
Disagreements developed
Heresy
called
and to end conflicts
all beliefs were compiled
Constantine called
in the
all
New Testament
Church leaders
to a meeting in
Nicene
where they established the
Basic beliefs of the Church
Several writers
helped define the
Church beliefs
they were called the
Fathers of the Church
one of the most important was
Augustine
he also
envisioned the
who said that
Humans needed the grace
of God to be saved
which
Could never be
destroyed
People could not
receive God’s grace
unless they
Belonged to
the Church
City of God
Received the
sacraments.
