Marine Biome Zones
Label the map below with the marine biomes: tropical, temperate, polar.
Polar Marine Biomes

Consists of both the Arctic and Antarctic marine regions

Ocean water rarely gets warmer than 10oC

Salinity varies according to the season

Primary productivity is limited by the availability of sunlight even though
the water is cold and so has lots of dissolved carbon dioxide

During the summer months, when sunlight is available 24 hours a day ,
the productivity peaks and there is an explosion of life but it is short-lived
Temperate Marine
Biomes
Tropical Marine Biomes
Conclusion

Consists of both the north temperate region and the south temperate
region

Area is greater than the area of the tropical and polar regions combined

Surface water temperature averages about 10OC

Salinity is relatively constant

Most prolific environment in terms of productivity

Consists of the north tropical region, south tropical region and includes
the equator

Salinity varies from quite high (due to evaporation) to low at the equator
(where river run-off is high)

Tropical oceans nearly always have surface temperatures above 20 OC

warm water holds less dissolved carbon dioxide than cooler water,
therefore productivity is low

exceptions include areas of coastal upwelling and coral reefs

coral reefs are teeming with life but these areas only represent 2% of the
tropical ocean area
