HISTORY OF MASS COMMUNICATION SUMMARY Mass Communication dates back to 1,800 BC, where Archeologists found ancient bulletins and brochures in ancient Mesopotamia. Mass Communications is a natural and recurring element of human social interaction. Persuasive communication was analyzed and taught to other to help them speak effectively. Communication is said to be linked with the growth and maintenance of religion. Mass communication is used daily in everyone’s lives, whether we recognize it or not. TOPICS I FOUND INTERESTING Socrates of Athens, Plato, and Aristotle American colleges and higher education Effective tactics and strategies that’s are common in Mass Communication SOCRATES OF ATHENS taught that, rather than the relativism of the Sophists, effective communication should be based on truth. The teacher of Plato and Aristotle. credited as one of the founders of Western Philosophy. PLATO Plato was one of Aristotle’s students, which he carried on and expanded his work to teach others how to effectively communicate. ARISTOTLE One of Plato’s students. He contributed mostly to contemporary communication. Analyzed how to speak persuasively to have an effect argument. Which he taught to others. Aristotle’s book Rhetoric on effective communication still remains influential to this day AMERICAN COLLEGES AND HIGHER EDUCATION American colleges have led the way in the use of publicity to promote an ethically higher education. Harvard College - Used brochures to communicate with students and to let them know what was going on on campus. Kings College -Sent out an announcement of its 1758 graduation ceremonies. This was the first to do so anywhere in the colonies and several newspapers printed this information. This was apparently the first I nstance of a new release Education continued to expand on different tactics to mass communicate to their students. EFFECTIVE TACTICS AND STRATEGIES THAT’S ARE COMMON IN MASS COMMUNICATION Throughout history, there have been examples of successful Mass Communications campaigns. Tactic examples: Petitions- this is something that is formally drawn request to get someone's attention. Speeches- groups of people come together to listen to a certain person to gather information about a certain subject. The speaker communicates this information with the group. Strategy examples: Songs- songs are used to communicate on a daily basis. Mothers communicate through songs to their child and others put their feelings into lyrics. News pegs- We communicate news from around the world through news pegs. An interview is an example of a news peg. CONCLUSION Socrates of Athens, Plato, and Aristotle were key people to gaining knowledge in Mass Communications. They used the chain reaction of passing down each others finding to expand the meaning of communication. American Colleges led the way to help publicize Mass Communication. They used different tactics to give out information. The history of mass communication played a big role in expanding the different tactics and strategies of communications with one another. AFTER READING I LEARNED…. Mass Communication is expanding day by day and has been practices for many years. There are many different forms of Mass Communication. Verbally communicating with one another is just one of many. Many people had a really big impact on the findings of communication and in the longs run, made our lives and schooling easier.
