January Programs for Children and Families Children’s Theatre Auditions Attention, young performers: the Northbrook Theatre Children’s Company will hold auditions for Into the Woods, Jr. on Sunday, January 5 from 12:30-5:30pm and Tuesday, January 7 from 4-7pm at the Northbrook Theatre, 3323 Walters Avenue. Auditions are open to boys and girls in grades 6-10. Rehearsals begin on January 14, and performances are in March. Indoor Golf Lessons Kids can learn to play golf indoors on Sunday mornings with classes beginning on January 5 at Greenbriar Gym. Children are grouped by age in the program, under the direction of Michael Wenzel, an Illinois PGA Junior Golf Leader. Four-week sessions are offered on Sunday mornings with a focus on skills development and a low student-to-coach ratio. Games are scheduled to start the weekend of January 11. Each team will play a seven-game season with weekday games possible. Teams are formed by grade, school and gender. The Northbrook Park District trip includes transportation, supervision and admission to all exhibits. Children should bring a nut-free lunch and a drink and meet at the Leisure Center at 9am; extended care is available before and after the trip. The Northbrook Park District Skating School provides high-quality instruction for beginners through advanced students with a multi-level class structure, based on standards developed by the Ice Skating Institute (ISI). Winter Carnival The award-winning Winter Carnival from the Northbrook Park District returns to Meadowhill Park on Saturday, January 11 from 11am-1:30pm with horse-drawn carriage rides, ice sculpture demonstrations, and a dogsled demonstration. The free family event also offers games, a snowshoe obstacle course, decorated sled contest, DJ music, bonfire with s’mores and hot chocolate. All ages are welcome. Swim Lessons and Open Swim Indoor swimming lessons begin on January 12 at Glenbrook North High School. Goodnight Moon the Musical A musical version of Goodnight Moon, the children’s picture book, will open on January 18 at the Northbrook Theatre. The simple bedtime story will be transformed into a 3-D wonderland with catchy songs, delightful choreography, a colorful set and smile-inducing costumes. Performances are on Saturdays at 10am and 1pm through February 22, presented by the Northbrook Theatre for Young Audiences, the North Shore’s only professional Equity theatre dedicated to the child and family audience. Camp Signup Underway The Northbrook Park District is accepting registration for 2014 Summer Camps and Workshops. The District offers 10 weeks of enriching experiences for tots through teens. Most camps offer a discount for early registration, and many offer a hot lunch program and extended care. Register early to save your place and save money!
