Rock Facts for MiniBooks
1. Rock Cycle
Igneous rocks can change into metamorphic rocks from heat and
pressure. The weathering of igneous rocks can lead to the
formation of sedimentary rocks.
Sedimentary rocks can change into metamorphic rocks from heat
and pressure.
The weathering of metamorphic rocks can lead to the formation of
sedimentary rocks. Melting lava with metamorphic rock can cool
and form igneous rocks.
2. Rock Families
Sedimentary, Igneous, Metamorphic
3. Igneous Facts
Rocks formed from when melted (molten) rock material cools and
hardens. Magma may cool above or below the ground to form
igneous rocks, sometimes called fire rocks
Granite, Scoria, Pumice, Obsidian, Rhyolite, Basalt, Gabbro
4. Sedimentary Facts
Rocks made from small bits of matter (bits of weathered rock,
shells, or remains) that have been compacted or cemented together.
They form in layers and often contain fossils.
Sandstone, Limestone, Shale, Conglomerate, Bituminous Coal,
Gypsum, Siltstone
5. Metamorphic Facts
A rock formed from another kind of rock deep beneath the earth’s
surface where it’s under intense heat and pressure. These
“morphed” rocks are noted for their flattened grains.
Schist, Gneiss, Slate, Quartzite, Marble
