THE PELOPONNESIAN WAR

• C.O.: I will be able to describe the events leading to the
Peloponnesian war by writing a summary in my Cornell notes.
• L.O.: I will tell my partner the big idea of the Peloponnesian war.

ANCIENT GREECE
WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE THE
PELOPONNESIAN WAR?
• Athens and Sparta are fighting the
Persians to protect themselves from
invasions.
• The Athenians and Spartans are successful
and defeat the Persians during the many
battles known as the Persian wars.

• Athens is a democracy
• Sparta is an oligarchy
• Both have won battles and want to take all the
power they can get
• Some Athenians move into other city-states

THE ATHENIAN EMPIRE
• The Delian League was formed by Athens and its allies
• They met in the island of Delos
• The league supported a democratic government
• Athens was the most powerful in the league
• The league was more of an Athenian empire
• City-states were forced in and had to make money contributions
for their navy
• It was hard to get out of the League, at one point one city-state
tried getting out and Athens made war on them.

1. What was the Delian League?
THE PELOPONNESIAN LEAGUE
• Sparta formed an alliance with city states of the
Peloponnesian peninsula
• This league supported a oligarchic government
• They tried to expand their rule over other city states
• Athens placed a ban on trade with Mergara, a member
of the Peloponnesian league and this angered Sparta
• The both got ready for war

2. What was the Peloponnesian league?
THE PELOPONNESIAN WAR
• Sparta marched in to Athens
• The Spartans settled down for a siege (force them to surrender and cut off their food
supply)
• Athens resisted for a year and didn’t give in because they were prepared for this.
• A plague broke out in Athens, thousands of people died and the Spartans left. BUT
THE WAR CONTINUED
• Athens fought the coastal cities and Sparta fought by land
• They finally agreed to a truce and the war ended

FOR LONG….
THERE THEY GO AGAIN
• Athens launched a military invasion on Sicily
• The Spartans helped the people of Sicily, and together they defeated
Athens
• Spartans attacked the Athenians at Helenspont
• Spartans attacked the city state of Athens by cutting their resources.
(Athens was not getting their food)
• Athens surrendered their empire and gave up.
OUTCOME OF THE PELOPONNESIAN
WAR
• Cities around Greece were destroyed
• Governments fell apart
• Trading dropped
• Greece was divided by war and the citystates continued to fight each other
