War
Athenian League
What generalizations can you make from this
map?
Overview of the War






Sparta invades Athens.
Sparta stronger army, Athens stronger navy.
Athens navy can bring in food and does not starve to
death.
Athens protects itself from Sparta and settles in for a long
war.
The war lasts for 27 years!!!
The Spartans win because they have a more disciplined
military and Athens overstretched itself.

Turning Points in the War


1st – Plague breaks out in Athens.
2nd – Athenians invade Syracuse on island of
Sicily.
Syracuse is one of Sparta’s wealthiest and most
powerful allies.
 Athenians lose.



The Spartans then gain the support of Persia.
The war continues for another 9 years before
the Athenians are weakened to point of
surrender in 404 BC.
Greece remains instable for many years, which
leads to Macedonia taking them over later.
Reflection
 How
might the Peloponnesian
War affect Greece in the long
run?
