Improving Murray Cod habitat in South West QLD The Charleville Fishing and Restocking Club and South West NRM have recently improved habitat for the native fish, Murray Cod (Maccullochella peelii peelii) at Bakers Bend, Warrego River, Charleville. The project consisted of collecting large snags (logs) from the local area and placing them in the waterhole at strategic locations. The snags will become waterlogged and increased in weight, making them more likely to stay in position during the next river flows. Habitat for native fingerlings released by the Fishing Club was also increased. Medium sized rocks were placed in areas Figure 1: Preparing snag to enter water of shallow water to improve the conditions for fingerling survival and establishment. This will expand the number of suitable sites for releasing fingerlings into the Warrego River into the future. South West NRM will continue to monitor the native fish populations at the snag sites and evaluate project outcomes. Technical advice and supervision was generously provided by the Queensland Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. The project team would also like to acknowledge Charlie Wyatt Excavators, for their expertise and contribution to a successful fish habitat project.
