with the International Study Centre for Scenic Arts.
Twelve top-grade workshops in Milan, Venice, Rimini and London.
The next appointment: 10th October at the Academy of Brera, with Japanese designer Setsu Asakura
Three meeting are being held with the sector’s personalities at Rimini Fiera from 5th to 8th April 2008
during the 21st International Exhibition of Show Business, Installation & Broadcast Technology
Rimini,… June 2007 – The new languages of world scenography in the spotlight at SIB 2008. The biennial
International Exhibition of Show Business, Installation and Broadcast Technology, being held from April 5th to
8th 2008 at Rimini Fiera, continues its strategy of targeting professional users with unique important projects.
The sector’s most important expo event, organized by Rimini Fiera with the sponsorship of TEN –
Technology & Entertainment Network Design and SILB Italian Dancehall Owners Syndicate, is among
the promoters of one of the most important initiatives ever staged in Italy: 12 master classes with the
masters of international scenography.
For the first time in Italy, during 2007 and 2008, The Scenographer, the first magazine on scenographic
culture with worldwide circulation, SIB 2008 and SCSA International Study Centre for Scenic Arts present a
series of meetings-workshops with the most important designers in the theatre and cinema field.
In fact, bearing in mind the rapid on-going economic, legislative and professional changes taking place in the
artistic and cultural system, it is easy to see the need for the scenographic art sector to respond to the
challenge set by the new artistic and multimedia languages and the rapid evolution of some sectors that are
highly innovative from a technical point of view.
To meet these requirements, it’s necessary to plan and organize new training programs able to combine in a
virtuous circuit artistic design, scientific knowledge and manufacturing situations able to cooperate on common
objectives for joint use. This is the only possible way to eliminate the barrier still dividing the training/reaching
world and the world of applications, forming a so-called “chain” that accompanies students from the creation of
an idea to its realization.
These are unique unrepeatable opportunities for the professionals of the future. The workshop program was
inaugurated on 17 April in Milan, at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, where over 400 participants – including
students, university lecturers, professional theatre technicians, scenographers and companies – had the
opportunity of networking for an entire day with one of the most esteemed theatre and opera scenographers
and directors: Pier Luigi Pizzi.
During 2007, two more international-level workshops will be held in Milan. On 10th October, the day on
which Brera Academy hosts Japanese scenographer Setsu Asakura, who for the occasion will meet
students, lectures and professionals from the sector along with Masataro Imafuyi, the undisputed master of
Shiamisen – the traditional string instrument of Kabuki theatre – and authoress and dramatist Masako
Takeda.
Setsu Asakura – daughter of famous sculptor Asakura Fumio – is a theatrical scenographer, painter and
illustrator. She was a lecturer at the Kuwazawa Design Institute.
She has received numerous prizes and awards during her forty-year career as a scenographer, during which
her work has ranged from opera to avant-garde theatre. She has been the artistic director of Tokyo's
prestigious 1010 Theatre since 2003
At Brera Academy, Ms. Asakura will hold a lesson on stage/set design, talking with the students and
presenting videos and films shot by her during the preparation of some of her shows.
The following Master-Classes will be hosted by other great world-famous masters, such as Hugo De Ana,
Ming Cho Lee, William Dudley, Alex McDowell, Tino Schaedler, Peter Lamont, Patrick Tatopoulos,
Maurizio Balò and Margherita Palli.
In fact, the busy program will continue in 2008 in Venice, at the prestigious headquarters of the Cini
Foundation, and at Rimini Fiera during SIB 2008 – at which three internationally renowned masters will
be hosted – and will finish in London at the Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design.
