The Greeks held athletic events to honor the gods
and goddesses. In Athens, the athletic games
were known as the Panathenaic Games that
honored the goddess Athena. The games included
many events such as chariot races, wresting,
running and boxing. Men from the Greek citystates traveled far and wide to participate in this
physical competition against one another. The
winners were celebrated and crowned with a
wreath of laurel leaves and given pots filled with
olive oil. These games were a popular form of
entertainment in ancient times.
