Birth Place of Western Civilization
 Greece people created the first democratic government
 They created the first Olympic Games
 They made an important contribution to architecture, art, science, and
mathematics
City States
 There were many city states scattered across Greece: Troy, Thebes, Athens,
Corinth, Ephesus, Sparta, Rhodes
 Each City State was unique. Each had its own system of government, laws, and
military
 Since the different City States had similar customs, art, religion, etc., historians
combined them into a single great civilization
Religion
 The Greek religion was very well organized
 Religion was taught mainly through Greek Myth that was passed down from one
generation to the next
 The Greek believed the Olympian Gods were one big family
Democracy
 Athens was the birthplace of Democracy
 “Democracy” is a Greek word which means “Government by the People”
 Pericles was the founder of Democracy in Athens
Olympic Games
 Olympic Games was first held in Ancient Olympia (776 BC)
 The Olympic Games were held in the name of Zeus, the father of gods
 The Olympic Games were held every 4 years in midsummer and lasted for about a
month
Theatre
 Plays were held in open-aired theatres
 In the middle of each theatre was an altar to the god Dionysus
 Actors wore masks with exaggerated expressions
