Werkstuk Geschiedenis Olympic games WHEN FIRST HELD AND HOW OFTEN HELD? The Olympic games in the ancient Greece were first held in 776 BC. By 600 BC all city states were taking part. But thats extra information. They were held every four years. The Olympic games in the modern time were first held in 1896. The Modern Games are also held every four years. WHERE HELD? The Ancient games were held on the biggest mountain of Greece, Olympus in the city Olympia. The first modern Olympic games were held in Athens that lays also in Greece. But the other Olympic games were held somewhere else at the world. In 2008 we had Olympic games too, it was held in Beijing that lays in China. WHAT EFFECT DOES IT HAVE ON POLITICS AND GOVERNMENTS? One of the Olympic memories from the Greeks is: Sport reconciled. Politics and governments has a big effect for the Ancient games and even now҅ because of the politics and governments are taking care that the countries and the people of the country are coming closer together. The politics and governments were also taking care that the war that was playing during the Olympics was going to stop. Well, a break until the Olympics were done. The reason of the Ancient Games is the same, to unite the countries of the world to have a better relation. And when you have a better relation is less war less problems less deaths HOW LONG DOES IT LAST? In 692 BC the Olympic games lasted one day. Later it was until two days and in 632 BC until five days. One opening day, three competition days and one closing date. The Modern Games in the summer are fourteen days long and the winter games usually ten days. WHO COMPETES? Only the man could compete the Olympics because it was forbidden for married woman but unmarried woman may come. But a greek woman married on her 13. So there were not many greek womans who could watch the Olympics. But there were separate games for Hera, held at a different time that only woman could attend. You could only complete the Olympics if you were an amateur. You had to do it out love not to win. And you could not be a slave you have to be a freeman. Now in the modern games almost everyone can compete. But you have to be very good in the sport and be talented. Because you are struggling for your land. But man en woman can play together. Even handicapped persons can play the Modern Games now, but then separate: the Paralympics. At first, there were hardly any facilities, but in 500 BC, there were build two small bathhouses for the athletes. There was also build a small guesthouse for their trainers and spectators. And in 200 BC a gymnasium was built for the athletes to practice in. A gymnasium is a place where Greek men went to exercise in open air. For the competitors: facilities for training; gyms, swimmingpools etc. Also massage for better muscles and condition. For the spectators: the galleries, cafes, restaurants etc. DO THE GAMES DEVELOP OVER TIME? Yes, because in the first of the beginning there were no many sports to play. And only one day, but later on there came many more sports and it developed to five days. And also the athletes were going to better and the people who watched wanted more. And even now in the Modern Games, the games are developing more sports are developing itՒs almost the same reason of the Ancient Games. People who watched want more, better games, better ceremonies and more prices.
