Men vs women…
Only men competed in and attended the games. Women were not allowed to do either.

In the first Olympics there was only one event, a footrace called the stade.
Type of events… Pentathlon
In the Ancient Olympics, men competed in 5 events known as the Pentathlon.
The five events were running, long jump, discus, javelin, and wrestling.
Boxing and chariot racing were the next events added to the games.

Winners received a wreath of olive branches to wear as a crown upon their heads or
pottery. Today, winners receive medals.

The 5 rings represent the 5 continents of Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia, and the Americas.
What does the Olympic torch represent…
The burning flame of the torch represents peace. In Ancient times, all fighting (war) would
cease during the Olympics.
Where does the torch relay start and end…
The torch is lit in Greece and carried around the world to the host city of the Olympic
games. In 1996, the host city was Atlanta, Georgia. In 2008, it was Beijing, China. In 2012,
the Olympic games will be held in London, England.
How are the Ancient Olympics and Modern Olympics alike and different…
In some ways, the Olympics of today still resemble those of Ancient times, but some things
have changed. Similarities exist regarding how often the games take place, taking an oath
to compete, having a torch relay, a parade, and types of events. Differences exist
regarding who competes and attends, types of awards, types of events, where the games
are held, and why the games are held.

Doric… square, plain, strong (Dad)
Ionic… scrolls, curly ringlets, “eyes” (Mom) –Bionic
Corinthian… elaborate, flowery design (Sister)
