Explain how the geography of Egypt kept them well protected. 7 RELIGION AND EGYPTIAN LIFE 8 THE GODS OF EGYPT vEgyptians practiced polytheism. 1 10/18/2016 Egyptians practiced polytheism. vEveryone expected to worship same gods but how they worshiped differed from one region to another. vBuilt temples to the gods all over the kingdom. vOver time, certain cities became worship centers for certain gods. vIn Memphis people prayed to Ptah, the creator of the world. 9 THE GODS OF EGYPT vRa, or Amon-Ra: the sun god v vOsiris: the god of the underworld v vIsis: the goddess of magic v vHorus: a sky god, god of the pharaohs 10 EMPHASIS ON THE AFTERLIFE vMuch of Egyptian religion focused on the afterlife. vLife after death. vStemmed from idea of ka. vA person’s life forces vAfter death, the ka left the body and became a spirit but remained linked to the body and could not leave its burial site. vThe ka had same needs as a living person which is why tombs were filled with objects for the afterlife. 11 BURIAL PRACTICES vTo keep the ka from suffering Egyptians developed a method called embalming. vEmbalming allowed bodies to be preserved for many, many years vEmbalming allowed their bodies to become mummies (specially treated bodies wrapped in cloth) 12 BURIAL PRACTICES vEmbalming was a complex process. vTook several weeks vWhen finished bodies were wrapped in linen cloths and bandages. vOnly royalty and Egypt’s elite (people of wealth) could afford to have mummies made. 13 THE PYRAMIDS 14 THE PYRAMIDS vPyramid- huge stone tombs with four triangle-shaped walls that met in a point on top. vBegan building during Old Kingdom. vAmazing feats of engineering (the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes). 2
