Ancient Egypt and Nubia
Section 3: Egyptian Religion
Egyptian Gods and Goddesses
Early Egyptians worshipped different gods and goddesses according to where they lived. Later,
all Egyptians worshiped the same main gods, such as the chief god, Amon-Re.
Belief in an Afterlife
Ancient Egyptians believed in life after death. During the Old Kingdom this afterlife was thought to
be only for the upper classes. In the Middle Kingdom, all people felt they could attain it. To
prepare for life after death, they believed that one’s body needed to be mummified, or preserved
through a drying process.

The Pharaohs’ Tombs
Pyramids, or tombs for the pharaohs, were begun when a pharaoh was crowned. Their
construction could take 20 years and they were built on the west bank of the Nile. Workers
pushed the huge stone blocks up ramps using rollers and levers.
