Stage Notes March 2010 Season 62, Issue 4 Next on the LTVB Stage…. All My Sons by Arthur Miller Performances: March 12th – April 4th Fridays and Saturdays 8:00 pm, Sundays 2:30 pm Directed by Nancy Bloom Powerful drama… Notes from Director Nancy Bloom After directing three successful dramedies for LTVB, I felt the time had arrived to take on the challenge of a full-on dramatic piece. So why not just dive in with one from America’s most prolific playwrights? Arthur Miller’s All My Sons debuted on Broadway in January of 1947 to mixed reviews. The New York Times, however, hailed Mr. Miller as a genuine new talent and the play won the New York Drama Critics' Circle award for best play of 1947, beating out Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh. Additionally, it won that year’s Tony Award for Best Play and Best Director (Elia Kazan). Miller would go on to write such classic American plays as Death of a Salesman and The Crucible. The quality of Miller’s works are evident judging from the number of Broadway revivals, community theater presentations and the level of acting talent they attract. In 2008 on Broadway, All My Sons starred John Lithgow, Diane Wiest, Patrick Wilson and Katie Holmes and currently-running this season is A View from the Bridge, starring Tony Award winner Liev Schreiber and Scarlett Johansson. What attracted me to this play specifically was the challenge of finding the right combination of actors and highlighting the many different themes that run throughout the play into a thought-provoking, powerful evening of the best that live theater has to offer. Although written in 1947, Miller’s themes of the American dream, self-deception, wartime profiteering, and idealism still resonate today. Ultimately, All My Sons illustrates how secrets, no matter how long buried and seemingly appearing to hold a family together, eventually end up ripping them apart. It is with great pleasure that we announce that for the benefit of our patrons, LTVB now accepts credit cards at the box office! We accept Visa, MasterCard and Discover cards in addition to cash or check. Please note that we do not take payment in advance by credit card, rather, that method of payment is now available at the box office when you pick up your tickets. Reservations Policies With another show on the horizon, this may be a good time to explain to our valued season ticket holders why we ask that they exchange their season tickets for admission tickets at the box office. This is a question that comes up with some regularity so we are happy to, hopefully, answer that question for everyone. As you may be aware, every public building in every state has a regulation regarding occupancy. These regulations are designed to ensure the safety of all building occupants in the event of a fire or other emergency. In order to ensure we are complying with all regulations, we must keep a tally of the number of patrons who make reservations for, and then physically come to see, each show. In the days or weeks leading up to a performance if we approach our maximum seating we can no longer accept reservation requests for that performance. At this point we can only advise a patron who cannot make a reservation, but remains hopeful of seeing the performance on that particular day, to come to the theatre and put their name on the “standby” list. We often have reservations that are not picked up and patrons who did not make reservations come to the theatre hoping for a seat. Because of this, there is often a discrepancy between our reservation numbers and the actual number of seats filled. This discrepancy is why we ask season ticket holders to come to the box office to exchange their season tickets for admission tickets, so we can maintain an accurate count of occupants and thereby comply with occupancy regulations and avoid overselling a performance and disappointing a patron who wishes to see the show. Behind the Scenes at LTVB Farewell and Welcome... LTVB’s long time volunteer and Board Member Bill Vaughan is taking on the crazy task of building a new home in Maine, and has resigned from the Board. We wish him well and will miss him, but the good news is that we’ll still be seeing him from time to time, at least until the new house is complete! LTVB is delighted to welcome Lisa Bolen to our Board of Directors. Lisa has worked in some capacity on every show for the past year, most recently as Stage Manager for An Act of the Imagination and for All My Sons. She is dedicated and hard working, finding time to volunteer while working full time and attending night classes! Welcome Lisa! With these changes, there have been some shifts in Board duties (see page 3). Lisa will be taking on the job of Corresponding Secretary for the Board, which includes the production of Stage Notes. Many Thanks! ...to Kevin Martingayle for donation of cans of paint ...to Virginia Bloom for donation of clothes and shoes ...to all of our volunteers who have helped with All My Sons...the beautiful backyard you will see is the result of hundreds of man (and woman) work hours—it is truly a labor of love!
